They cover different risks. Public liability insurance covers you against injury to people and property that you may be liable for. Professional indemnity insurance (PI) covers you should you give advice or design services to clients, and they suffer a financial loss because of that advice. They may claim a breach of professional duty by you and claim their loss from you. PI helps meet the costs of that claim, and your legal costs in doing so.
Good question. Yes, it can, but it depends on the circumstances. Please tell us when you arrange cover if you have sub-contractors working for you.
We strongly recommend however, any subbies have their own insurance cover.
Why? Because if a subcontractor is negligent and leaves their tools out, causing a third party to trip and injure themselves, then this claim may need to be made under the subcontractor’s policy, not yours.
From a public liability perspective, having subcontractors arrange their own insurance is a better option for your business.
Yes, we can tailor your insurance for your business, so you have the right limits for the size of your business, and the right type of cover. We’ll advise you on that; the more you can tell us about your business, the more help we can offer.
For example, if you offer advice to your clients, we should include Professional indemnity insurance for you. As your business grows, we can adjust your public liability insurance, tools and equipment cover, and your vehicle insurance so you are adequately covered.
From one claim to another, claims can be very different.
If you have a claim, the best thing to do is to notify us as soon as the incident happens. To do this, contact your broker or call us on 0800 376 304, and we will guide you through the steps.
We will also send you a claims form which explains the process. We’re here to help.
Yes. Your certificate of currency is proof that you have a current insurance policy, and it may be required if you’re working at certain sites. Once your policy is in place, we can send you a valid certificate of currency.
